Action Plans

How do I help a student who is struggling with completing homework?  One approach is to discuss the student’s goals for their future.  This student said they want to go to college and do well in school.  After writing that down, I asked the student to identify three short term goals that would help them make progress towards their long term goal.

This student identified the following short term goals: 1) Stay organized, 2) Don’t give up, and 3) Do all assignments.

Together we chose to focus on the third short term goal, doing all assignments.  Our next step was to create an action plan, with three concrete steps the student could use to achieve their goal.  We also identified what the student tends to say to themselves that defeats their goal, and what their inner coach could say instead.  Finally, we identified concrete locations and times, so the student will be more aware in those moments of whether they’re using their inner coach or using self-defeating comments.
